DNA Interest Group: DNA - Your partner in crime?

Tuesday, June 26, 2018 - 6:00pm to 7:30pm
Meeting Room A
Presenter Name:
Bryant McAllister

DNA testing is a powerful tool used by law enforcement agencies. Now, investigators may have a new resource to identify criminals: direct-to-consumer genetic testing databases. Join us to learn about the history of genetic testing in criminal cases, and how DNA and genealogical data can be combined to crack cold cases (recently featured in the Golden State killer case). We will discuss benefits and cautionary tales of using DNA in criminal investigations. Looking forward, we will survey major technical and legal issues surrounding the use of direct-to-consumer genetic testing data such as AncestryDNA or 23andMe to identify crime suspects.

The DNA Interest Group is designed to bring together individuals in the Iowa City area interested in learning about the use and interpretation of commercial DNA test results. Meetings will address a variety of different topical areas, including applications in genealogy, inferences of traits, exploration of human genetic variation, and the societal impact of these services. Meetings will also include group discussions, and are free and open to the public. If this topic interests you, join us!
