Hortus is a sound installation that will respond to the movement of Festival participants between events. Sensors placed in the Ped Mall’s plant life will measure the natural resources — wind and light — the plants are harvesting, and these dynamics will be constantly translated into bird sounds.
In this artificial ecology, passers-by will trigger a financial algorithm (similar to those used in speculative economic markets), shifting the birdsong towards those plants that seem most “profitable” in that split second.
When a visitor decides to stop to read the displays, or to reflect, the environment’s original sound design returns.
An installation by International Writing Program participant Patrícia Portela.
This event is open to the public.
