Historical Iowa Civil Rights Network is hosting a premiere screening of the PBS American Experience documentary, "Freedom Summer" produced by Stanley Nelson.
"Freedom Summer" commemorates the 50-year anniversary of the Mississippi Summer Project, an effort to register African-Americans to vote in a state where less than 10 percent of its black citizens were permitted to cast ballots in the 1962 election. The documentary is about two hours in length. Following a short break, the steering group of the Historical Iowa Civil Rights Network will meet. The event is free and open to the public.
