Brazilian Literature in Translation Today

Thursday, November 8, 2018 - 7:00pm to 9:00pm
Meeting Room A

Bring your questions and join translators and writers John Keene, Karina Dodson, and Bruna Dantas Lobato as they discuss how their writing has influenced their translations and vice versa, issues in translation, identity politics in Latin America, and the future of Brazilian fiction.

JOHN KEENE is the author of the poetry collection Seismosis (1913 Press, 2006), the novel Annotations (New Directions, 1995), and the story collection Counternarratives (New Directions, 2015). He is also the translator of Hilda Hilst's Letters from a Seducer (Nightboat Books, 2014). A longtime member of the Dark Room Collective, Keene received a 2005 Whiting Writers Award and a 2018 MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship.

KATRINA DODSON is the translator from the Portuguese of The Complete Stories, by Clarice Lispector (New Directions, 2015), winner of the 2016 PEN Translation Prize, the American Translators Association Lewis Galantière Prize, and a Northern California Book Award. She is currently adapting her Lispector translation journal into a book and translating the 1928 Brazilian modernist classic, Macunaíma, the Hero Without Character, by Mário de Andrade (New Directions, 2019).

BRUNA DANTAS LOBATO received her MFA in Fiction from New York University in 2017 and is currently an Iowa Arts Fellow and MFA candidate at the Iowa Translation Workshop. Her stories, essays, and translations from the Portuguese have appeared in Harvard Review, Ploughshares, BOMB, The Common, A Public Space, and elsewhere. She is a 2018 A Public Space Fellow.
